FMCSA Required Disclosure
This document is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to be provided to all customers before an interstate move. Published by Interstate Compliance Solutions.
Before Your Move
Your Rights
- Receive a written estimate before your move
- Choose between binding and non-binding estimates
- Receive the FMCSA "Your Rights and Responsibilities" booklet
- Know the mover's USDOT number and verify their registration
- Choose your level of liability coverage (valuation)
- Receive a copy of the Bill of Lading before your goods are loaded
- Be present (or have a representative present) at pickup and delivery
- File a claim for loss or damage
- Use arbitration for unresolved disputes
Getting an Estimate
We will provide you with a written estimate before your move. The estimate will clearly state whether it is:
- Binding Estimate: The price quoted is the price you pay (for the services listed)
- Non-Binding Estimate: The final price may be higher or lower based on actual weight/time
- Not-to-Exceed: You won't pay more than quoted, but may pay less
Understanding Your Estimate
Your estimate should include:
- The mover's name, address, and USDOT number
- Pickup and delivery addresses
- Estimated pickup and delivery dates
- Description of all services and charges
- Valuation coverage information
- Payment terms and accepted methods
Warning Signs of Rogue Movers
Be cautious of movers who: demand large deposits, don't provide written estimates, show up with unmarked trucks, or refuse to provide their USDOT number. Report suspicious movers to FMCSA at 1-888-368-7238.
Your Responsibilities
What You Must Do
- Provide accurate information about items being moved
- Disclose access conditions at both locations
- Be present at pickup and delivery (or have an authorized representative)
- Prepare appliances for transport (disconnect, defrost, secure)
- Inventory your belongings before the move
- Review and sign all documents carefully
- Note any damage on the inventory at delivery
- File claims within required timeframes
Valuation and Liability
Federal law requires movers to offer two levels of liability coverage:
Released Value Protection (Included)
At no additional charge, the mover's liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per article. This means if a 10-pound item worth $1,000 is lost or destroyed, you would receive only $6.00.
Full Value Protection (Optional)
For an additional charge, the mover is liable for the replacement value of lost or damaged items, or the cost to repair them. This provides significantly more protection for your belongings.
Recommendation
We strongly recommend Full Value Protection for valuable shipments. The cost is based on the declared value of your shipment and the deductible you choose.
For complete details on our valuation options, see our Valuation Coverage Options page.
The Bill of Lading
The Bill of Lading is the contract between you and the mover. It includes:
- Your name and addresses
- Description of goods being transported
- Agreed-upon dates for pickup and delivery
- Charges and payment terms
- Valuation coverage selected
- Claims filing information
Important
Never sign a blank Bill of Lading. Read it carefully and ensure all information is accurate before signing. Keep your copy in a safe place.
At Delivery
- Be present to accept delivery
- Check items against the inventory list
- Note any damage or missing items on the delivery receipt BEFORE signing
- Do not let movers pressure you to sign without inspection
- Take photos of any damage
- Keep all moving documents
Filing a Claim
If your goods are lost or damaged, you have the right to file a claim:
- Time Limit: Claims must be filed in writing within 9 months of delivery
- Acknowledgment: We must acknowledge your claim within 30 days
- Resolution: We must offer a settlement or denial within 120 days
- Arbitration: Available for disputes over $1,000
